Sony's Profit Jumped 45%. A Spider-Man Movie Is Part of the Reason — and Nintendo Fell 16% the Same Week.
Sony posted ¥622.3 billion ($3.95 billion) in quarterly operating profit, up 45% and well above forecasts, crediting games and movies including "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." It raised its full-year outlook 9%. Nintendo, reporting in the same cycle, went the other way.
Entertainment earnings are usually two stories wearing one headline. This week they're genuinely two stories: the same quarter, the same industry, opposite directions.
Sony's quarter
Sony reported Thursday in Tokyo that operating profit for its second quarter rose 45% to ¥622.3 billion (about $3.95 billion), against an LSEG average estimate of ¥505 billion from twelve analysts — a beat by roughly a quarter. Reuters attributes the strength to Sony's games and movies operations, naming the theatrical hit Spider-Man: Brand New Day among the contributors, and the company raised its full-year profit outlook by 9%, lifting guidance for its chips and music divisions as well. Shares closed up 7% ahead of the report.
The honest caveats are also in the report. PlayStation 5 hardware is slowing — 2.6 million units in the quarter against 4 million a year earlier — and the games division's near future leans on two things pulling opposite directions: Grand Theft Auto VI, launching November 19, which is expected to benefit the platform, and memory-chip prices inflated by the AI build-out, which raise its costs. A conglomerate's movie hit cushioning its hardware decline is exactly the synergy argument these companies make for existing; this quarter, the argument has numbers attached.
Nintendo's quarter, same week
Nintendo's operating profit fell 16% to ¥73.9 billion, missing estimates — in the first full reporting cycle of the Switch 2 era. Unlike Sony, Nintendo held its position: it maintained its full-year forecast and its 16.5 million Switch 2 sales outlook, and launched The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the new hardware on Thursday. Holding guidance after a miss is its own statement; so is the calendar doing the arguing.
The desk's interest in the pairing is the shape of it. One company's quarter was rescued by breadth — a film, a music division, a chip division — and the other's is a single-product story told at the start of a hardware cycle, where one quarter's miss is mostly timing. Both readings will be tested in the holiday quarter, which is the one that counts: Sony has a GTA launch to ride, Nintendo has a console installed base to build.
