Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Tom Felton Plays Draco Until January 3, Rupert Grint Joins as Ron on February 2

The Lyric Theatre is staging a relay race of film faces. A new company starts November 10, Felton's Draco hands the wand to the tour's original Draco on January 5, and in February Rupert Grint — Ron Weasley himself — takes over Ron. Playbill has the full calendar of who plays whom, and when.

Broadway's longest-running spell is changing faces in stages, and the dates matter — buy the wrong week and you'll see a different Draco than the one you came for. Playbill's casting announcement, published November 4, lays out the full rotation at the Lyric Theatre.

Who arrives November 10

A new group of company members starts Tuesday, November 10:

  • Jocelyn Maher joins as Ginny Potter, making her Broadway debut.
  • Matt Harrington, arriving from the North American tour, takes over Ron Weasley — for now (see February, below).
  • Erik Christopher Peterson rejoins the company as Scorpius Malfoy.

Continuing in their roles: John Skelley as Harry Potter, Emmet Smith as Albus Potter, Rachel Christopher as Hermione Granger, Janae Hammond as Rose Granger-Weasley, and Kristen Martin as Delphi Diggory.

The Draco relay

Tom Felton — the films' Draco Malfoy, now playing the grown Draco on stage — continues through January 3, 2027. On January 5, the role passes to Ben Thys, who originated Draco on the North American tour. Peterson's Scorpius run is set through January 31, so father and son Malfoy rotate on separate clocks.

February: the Ron handover

Harrington plays Ron through January 31, 2027. From February 2, Ron Weasley is played by Rupert Grint — the films' Ron, in a limited run — and the same night, Cody Combs makes his debut as Scorpius. Two of the original screen trio will now have played their own characters' adult selves or counterparts on this stage, which is the kind of casting loop this production has turned into an art form.

The show they're joining

Cursed Child opened on Broadway on April 22, 2018, as a two-part marathon; it earned 10 Tony nominations and won five, including Best Play. The production was condensed into a single-part version that opened December 7, 2021, and a still-shorter iteration followed in November 2024 — the form the show plays today. Eight years in, the Lyric's production is less a play than a relay institution: the batons are famous faces, and the race shows no sign of stopping.

If you're choosing a week: Felton completists have until January 3, Grint's first night is February 2, and the November 10 company is the one that carries the show through the holidays.
